He'd come across a squirrel, juicy and plump and just as he was about to strike a crow cawed a warning call and it scampered off. As if that wasn't enough of his problems, as he chased after it he tumbled into a thorn bush. He'd spent half the morning pulling thorns out of his pelt, but one had managed to bury its way deep into his paw pad and he still couldn't get it out. Cursing inwardly he stalked off back towards camp to find Whitestep and hopefully clear up this damned paw.
Back at camp all was quiet. The clan was still rebuilding, and so there weren't many cat's just yet. Heck, Duskstar himself was a rogue before he'd been accepted into the clan. And so far cat's hadn't exactly been willing to join SmokeClan. News of their preceding clan, ShadowClan, spread like wild fire. How their hearts were cold, and murderous cat's seemed to be born from their ranks. Lizard dung. he thought. Sure, maybe his clan wasn't the most friendly. But they were strong, and silent in the night. He couldn't have been more proud.
Shaking his fur free from the rest of the debris he made his way towards Whitestep's den. The tangy smell of herbs hit his nostrils and he smiled. Whitestep was one of few cats he could call friend, and he was glad to have her as his medicine cat. Though she had quite the temper when provoked. Pushing his way through he gave a small meow of greeting before stepping into the den. At first, he couldn't see anything, but slowly his eyes came into focus and he could just make out Whitestep's fluffy white tail in the dark.
Chucking he came up behind her and poked her flank. "Now now, what are you up to now Whitestep? Certainly nothing to cause trouble I hope." he purred, amusement glinting in his eyes. Stepping back he sat down, keeping his paw raised. The sting of the thorn seemed to have only gotten worse on his trek back to camp, and he was almost certain he would be hearing Whitestep complain about how careless he was. But what did it matter really? So long as his clan was healthy and strong, he would take on a hundred thorns.

Her sleep was dreamless, which almost never happened because of her connection with StarClan. She woke up before the dawn patrol had left and decided to look over her stock of herbs. The cave was dark, and the darkness made her feel even more tired than usual. She had been falling asleep on her paws when DuskStar's familiar scent wafted in through the entrance to her den. She glanced up when he mewed a greeting and came into the cave. "Now now, what are you up to now, Whitestep? Certainly nothing to cause trouble I hope," he said. Whitestep let out a purr of amusement. "Come on, DuskStar. You know me. Why would I ever cause trouble?" she asked with a wide-eyed, innocent look on her face.
She flicked his nose with the tip of her tail. "What did you do this time? You must have done something terribly stupid to be paying me a visit so early," she teased. She glanced down at his lifted paw. "Did a mean old nasty thorn bush bite you?" She sniffed at DuskStar's paw, assessing the damage that he had done to it. "This looks nasty, and it's going to bleed a lot when I get that thing out. Lift it more and brace yourself," she told him.

However, Whitestep was one of his closest friends, and he couldn't help but smile as she scolded him. But a thought crossed his mind and he stepped back, growling. "You dare speak to me that way?" he hissed. Before she could react he leaped on her, pinning her to the ground. Which wasn't the best idea, as it drove the thorn deeper in and he winced. Still, Duskstar purred smiling. "Sorry, I couldn't resist." he meowed.
Jumping off from her he sat down and obeyed her command of lifting his paw. He looked away, trying to focus on something else. Duskstar wasn't squirmish, StarClan no, but whenever he came into the medicine cat den he just couldn't watch. It pained him for some odd reason, and so he concentrated on something else.
His gaze was out of the den and into the camp, and with a grimace he noticed it had begun to rain. Not that he had a right to complain. The forest could use as much water as it could get before greenleaf came with it's bearing heat. Blinking back into reality he turned back and gazed at Whitestep, watching her search for the right herbs. He could still remember when they were kits playing outside the nursery. Sadness washed over him and he coughed. "Uhm...could we get this over with?" he meowed.

Wriggling, she pushed her hind legs into his belly, trying to shove him off. The weight lifted, and she took a deep breath. "You need to lose some weight, you lazy furball," she teased. His paw lifted and she took the end of the thorn between her teeth, and pulled. The small barb came out easy enough, but just as she thought, blood started flowing out of the wound immediately.
"Fox dung," she swore. Whitestep wrapped some cobwebs around her paw and began licking the wound, trying to get most of the blood off. She scrunched up her nose at the tangy, salty taste, but kept on licking until the bleeding slowed. She wrapped the cobweb carefully around her leader's paws, and let out a satisfied purr. "There, that should do the trick. If it becomes sore again, head back over here and I'll give you something for the wound."
Whitestep followed Duskstar's gaze out to the camp. She got up, pressing her side to his. "Remember the first time we saw rain?" she mewed, her voice light. "You just didn't know what to do until you found a puddle and nearly drowned in it." She purred at the thought. "Things were a lot more simple back then, weren't they?" Her voice had gotten softer, pained by the thought that things would never be quite so easy again. 237 words written for toxyk while listening to nothing Notes? Blah

The stinging sensation seemed to spread through his whole body until Whitestep’s tongue began to soothe his paw pad. After she applied the cobwebs he followed her to the mouth of her den, her fur pressed against him. As she spoke he was taken back to the time when they were kits. Him, Whitekit and Stonekit. Life was so much easier then. Not a care in the world.
Now, he was leader of SmokeClan, Whitestep was a medicine cat and Stonestar left SmokeClan and now lead MistClan. It was amazing what StarClan had in store for them. All of them. And Duskstar had to admit, he missed those days. I miss my friend… he thought, sadness coursing through him. Shaking himself he sighed.
“I didn’t drown Whitestep. I was just…confused, that’s all.” He purred, cuffing her ear playfully. “Besides, you weren’t too keen about it either as I recall. Stonestar pushed you into the puddle after me and you wailed like a newborn.” Duskstar chuckled. Stretching he lashed his tail, trying to decide if he wanted to venture out or not. The patrols would be out for a while yet, and Duskstar longed for the company of old friends. So he sat down, making small talk.
“Have StarClan sent you any news?” he ventured. He hadn’t had any dreams, though they were typically sent to medicine cats leaders sometimes received dreams from StarClan as well. They had been silent for so long Duskstar was beginning to feel a bit uneasy to be honest. However he wouldn’t tell Whitestep that. She got frazzled enough without Duskstar adding to the trouble.

She nudged Duskstar with her shoulder. "We were practically newborn kits in the first place," she mewed quietly. She sat down next to him, a purr rumbling in her throat. She licked a paw, running it over her ear as she thought about the answer to his question.
Her dreams the past few nights had been completely dreamless. With a sigh, she shook her head. "I haven't had any signs from StarClan, unfortunately. They have been quiet the past few moons." She let out a sigh. Was the Clan doing something to upset StarClan? Was that why they were so quiet all of a sudden? She looked out into the clearing, where the rain was starting to fall more heavily. "The half-moon is in nine sunrises. I'll be able to speak with StarClan at the Moonpool, and hopefully find out why they've been silent."
A twinge of doubt made her tail tip twitch. She couldn't even get an answer out of StarClan at the last half-moon. Was it really going to be any different this time? She settled down, curling her tail around her front paws. She wasn't sure if she should share her doubts with DuskStar. She shook her head. DuskStar was one of her best friends. She needed to share this. "I fear that the Clan may be doing something wrong in some way, and that's why StarClan have been so quiet. But I just can't think of what it would be. Everything is peaceful."
